    UK Trade SEO Glossary

Every SEO, PPC, Google Business Profile and web analytics term a UK tradesperson needs to know – defined in plain English, with the trade context that generic glossaries miss.

    SEO

    84 terms

    SEO

    SEO

Search Engine Optimisation – the practice of improving a website so it ranks higher in unpaid Google search results.

For UK tradespeople, SEO means appearing on page one of Google when homeowners search 'electrician near me' or 'roofer in [town]'. It combines on-page optimisation, technical fixes, content and local signals like Google Business Profile and reviews.

    SERP

    SEO

Search Engine Results Page – the page Google shows in response to a query.

A modern SERP includes paid ads, the local 3-pack, organic results, People Also Ask, AI Overviews, image carousels and knowledge panels. Tradespeople fight for visibility across multiple SERP features, not just position one.

    Keyword

    SEO

A word or phrase that users type into Google – the target of any SEO campaign.

Trade keywords range from short head terms ('electrician') to high-intent long tails ('emergency 24-hour electrician Norwich').

    Long-Tail Keyword

    SEO

A specific multi-word search phrase, usually with lower volume but higher buying intent.

Examples: 'EICR certificate cost London', 'flat roof repair Manchester'. Long-tail keywords convert at 3–5x the rate of generic head terms.

    Search Intent

    SEO

The underlying goal behind a Google search – informational, navigational, commercial or transactional.

A query like 'how does a combi boiler work' is informational. 'Emergency boiler repair near me' is transactional. Pages must match the intent to rank.

    Title Tag

    SEO

The HTML element that defines a page's title – shown as the clickable headline in Google.

Should be under 60 characters, include the focus keyword and a location modifier where relevant. Example: 'Emergency Electrician Norwich | 24/7 Callout | Sparks Ltd'.

    Meta Description

    SEO

The short snippet of text shown beneath the title tag in Google search results.

Not a direct ranking factor, but a strong CTR lever. Keep under 160 characters and include the keyword plus a clear call to action.

    H1

    SEO

The main on-page heading – the most important text element for telling Google what a page is about.

One H1 per page. Should match the search intent. Example H1 for a service page: 'Boiler Installation in Leeds – Gas Safe Engineers'.

    Meta Tag

    SEO

An HTML tag in the page head that gives search engines metadata such as title, description, robots and canonical.

Lovable apps inject meta tags via React Helmet so each route can have unique SEO settings.

    Canonical Tag

    SEO

An HTML link element that tells Google the preferred version of a page when duplicates exist.

Critical for trade sites with location pages and tracking parameters. Wrong canonicals can wipe a page from the index.

    Alt Text

    SEO

A description added to images for screen readers and search engines.

Describes what the image shows – not stuffed with keywords. 'Engineer fitting Worcester Bombi 4000 in Norwich kitchen' is good alt text.

    Internal Linking

    SEO

Hyperlinks between pages on the same website – used to pass authority and guide crawlers.

Strong internal linking funnels ranking power into your money pages (services, locations, contact).

    Anchor Text

    SEO

The clickable text inside a hyperlink.

Descriptive anchor text ('Norwich electrician services') outperforms generic anchors ('click here') for both users and Google.

    Schema Markup

    SEO

Structured data added to a page in JSON-LD format that helps search engines understand the content.

LocalBusiness, Service, FAQPage, BreadcrumbList and Review schema are essential for trade websites and unlock rich results in Google.

    Structured Data

    SEO

Standardised tagging that describes page content to search engines and AI systems.

Used interchangeably with schema markup. Critical for AI search citations from ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity.

    Sitemap

    SEO

An XML file listing every URL on your site so search engines can crawl them efficiently.

SEO For The Trade uses a sitemap index pointing to separate sitemaps for pages, services, blog posts and locations.

    robots.txt

    SEO

A plain text file that tells search engine crawlers which URLs they can or cannot access.

Used to block admin pages, staging sites and bot traps. Always include a Sitemap directive for discovery.

    Crawling

    SEO

The process search engines use to discover and download web pages.

Googlebot follows links and sitemap entries. Sites with poor internal linking get crawled less often.

    Indexing

    SEO

The process of adding crawled pages to Google's database so they can appear in search results.

Pages must be indexed before they can rank. Check Google Search Console's coverage report to confirm.

    Core Web Vitals

    SEO

Google's set of performance metrics measuring real-world user experience – LCP, INP and CLS.

Slow-loading trade sites lose mobile rankings. Aim for LCP under 2.5s, INP under 200ms and CLS under 0.1.

    Mobile-First Indexing

    SEO

Google's policy of indexing the mobile version of a website rather than the desktop version.

Over 70% of trade searches happen on mobile. A poor mobile experience now means poor rankings on every device.

    301 Redirect

    SEO

A permanent server-side redirect from an old URL to a new one.

Used to preserve SEO equity when migrating from WordPress to a modern stack. Cloudflare edge rules handle these without app code.

    404 Error

    SEO

An HTTP status code indicating a page was not found.

Excessive 404s waste crawl budget and frustrate users. Monitor them and 301-redirect popular dead URLs to live equivalents.

    Domain Authority

    SEO

A third-party score (most commonly from Moz) estimating how likely a domain is to rank.

Not a Google metric, but useful for benchmarking competitors. Trade sites typically range DA 10–35.

    E-E-A-T

    SEO

Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness and Trustworthiness – Google's quality framework for evaluating content.

Demonstrated through author bios, certifications (Gas Safe, NICEIC), case studies, reviews and consistent NAP.

    AI Overviews

    SEO

Google's AI-generated answer that appears at the top of many search results.

Pulls from authoritative pages with strong schema, clear structure and direct answers. Tradespeople optimise for this with Q&A formatted content and FAQ schema.

    LLM SEO

    SEO

Optimising content to be cited by Large Language Models like ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude.

Achieved through llms.txt files, semantic HTML, fact-sheet style pages, glossaries and consistent entity definitions.

    llms.txt

    SEO

A proposed plain-text file that summarises a website for AI crawlers and language models.

Lives at /llms.txt. Used by ChatGPT, Perplexity and other AI search engines to understand a brand without rendering JavaScript.

    Topical Authority

    SEO

The depth of expertise a website demonstrates on a specific subject.

Google rewards sites that cover a topic comprehensively. For trades, this means full guides, glossaries, FAQs and case studies – not just a homepage.

    Pillar Page

    SEO

A long-form page that covers a broad topic and links out to detailed sub-articles.

Used to organise topical clusters. A trade SEO pillar might link to guides, location pages and service pages for a complete authority hub.

    Topic Cluster

    SEO

A group of related pages linked together to demonstrate expertise on a topic.

Pillar + cluster architecture beats stand-alone posts for ranking competitive trade keywords.

    Entity SEO

    SEO

Optimising for Google's understanding of named things – people, places, businesses, concepts.

Achieved with consistent NAP, schema, sameAs links and clear definitions on glossary or fact-sheet pages.

    Knowledge Panel

    SEO

The information box Google shows on the right of search results for recognised entities.

Powered by entity data, schema and structured citations. A trade brand with a knowledge panel earns instant trust.

    People Also Ask

    SEO

An expanding list of related questions shown in Google search results.

Each PAA result is a snippet opportunity. Targeted with FAQ-style content and schema.

    Crawl Budget

    SEO

The number of pages Googlebot will crawl on a site within a given period.

Rarely an issue for small trade sites, but bloated WordPress installs with thousands of tag pages can waste it.

    Index Coverage

    SEO

The Google Search Console report showing which pages are indexed and which are excluded.

First place to look when a trade page won't rank. Common errors: 'Discovered – not indexed', 'Soft 404', 'Duplicate without canonical'.

    Robots.txt

    SEO

A text file at the root of a domain that tells search engines which pages they may crawl.

Misconfigured robots.txt files can accidentally hide entire trade websites from Google – the most common reason for sudden ranking collapses.

    XML Sitemap

    SEO

A machine-readable list of every important URL on a website.

Submitted in Google Search Console to speed up indexing of new service pages, locations and blog posts.

    Hreflang

    SEO

An HTML attribute that tells Google which language and region a page targets.

UK trade sites use hreflang='en-GB' to signal British English and avoid being shown to US searchers.

    Pagination

    SEO

Splitting long content or listings across numbered pages.

Common on blog archives. Should use rel='next/prev' or self-canonicals to avoid duplicate content issues.

    Faceted Navigation

    SEO

Filterable URL parameters used on listing pages – e.g. ?category=plumber&location=norwich.

Can create thousands of duplicate URLs if uncontrolled. Trade directories must canonicalise filter combinations carefully.

    Duplicate Content

    SEO

Identical or very similar content appearing on multiple URLs.

Common on trade sites with copy-pasted location pages. Either consolidate or rewrite with genuinely unique local detail.

    Thin Content

    SEO

Pages with little or no substantive value – often under 300 words.

Major reason trade location pages fail to rank. Aim for 800+ words of genuinely useful local content per page.

    Cornerstone Content

    SEO

The most important pages on a website that you want to rank for primary keywords.

For UK trades these are the main service pages and top location pages. They receive the most internal links and should be the deepest content.

    Cannibalisation

    SEO

When two pages on the same site compete for the same keyword and both underperform.

Frequent on trade sites with overlapping service pages. Fixed by merging, redirecting or differentiating intent.

    Core Web Vitals

    SEO

Google's set of speed and stability metrics – LCP, INP and CLS – used as ranking signals.

Trade sites that fail Core Web Vitals lose Map Pack rankings. Optimise images, defer scripts and use lazy loading.

    LCP

    SEO

Largest Contentful Paint – how quickly the largest visible element loads.

Should be under 2.5 seconds. Usually the hero image on trade websites – preload it and serve in WebP.

    INP

    SEO

Interaction to Next Paint – how responsive a page feels when users tap or click.

Replaced FID in 2024. Should be under 200ms. Often broken by heavy JavaScript on cheap WordPress trade sites.

    CLS

    SEO

Cumulative Layout Shift – how much the page jumps around as it loads.

Should be under 0.1. Caused by images without dimensions, late-loading ads or web fonts.

    Lazy Loading

    SEO

Deferring image and iframe loading until the user scrolls near them.

Massively improves LCP for image-heavy trade portfolios. Enabled with loading='lazy' on img tags.

    WebP

    SEO

A modern image format that's 25-35% smaller than JPEG at equivalent quality.

Standard on every trade site we build. Reduces bandwidth and improves Core Web Vitals scores.

    Render Blocking

    SEO

Resources that prevent a page from displaying until they finish loading.

Usually CSS or JS in the page head. Defer or async-load to unblock paint and improve LCP.

    Server-Side Rendering

    SEO

Generating page HTML on the server before sending it to the browser.

Crucial for SPAs. Without SSR or prerendering, single-page React sites can be invisible to crawlers.

    Prerendering

    SEO

Pre-generating static HTML for bots so JavaScript-heavy sites can be indexed.

We use a Cloudflare Worker plus Prerender.io to make sure every page on a React trade site renders fully for Google.

    Mobile-First Indexing

    SEO

Google's policy of using the mobile version of a site as the primary source for indexing and ranking.

If a trade site looks broken on a phone, it ranks badly even on desktop. Mobile speed and UX are now non-negotiable.

    AMP

    SEO

Accelerated Mobile Pages – Google's framework for ultra-fast mobile pages.

Largely deprecated. Modern Core Web Vitals optimisation makes AMP unnecessary for trade websites.

    HTTPS

    SEO

Encrypted version of HTTP – the secure protocol shown by the padlock in browsers.

A baseline ranking factor since 2014. Non-HTTPS trade sites are flagged as 'Not Secure' and lose conversions instantly.

    Redirect

    SEO

An instruction that sends a user and search engine from one URL to another.

301 (permanent) preserves SEO value. 302 (temporary) does not. Critical when migrating a trade site to preserve link equity.

    Soft 404

    SEO

A page that returns a 200 OK status but looks empty or irrelevant to Google.

Google de-indexes them. Common on poorly-built trade sites with empty location pages.

    Orphan Page

    SEO

A page with no internal links pointing to it.

Google rarely finds or ranks orphan pages. Common with old service pages forgotten in a site re-design.

    Noindex

    SEO

A meta tag that tells search engines not to include a page in their index.

Used on thank-you pages, internal admin or duplicate content. Accidentally noindexing a service page is a top-five SEO disaster.

    E-E-A-T

    SEO

Google's quality framework: Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness.

Trade businesses prove E-E-A-T with author bios, qualifications (Gas Safe, NICEIC), case studies, reviews and About pages.

    Author Schema

    SEO

Structured data identifying the author of a piece of content.

Boosts E-E-A-T signals when the author is a credentialled expert with their own profile page and sameAs links.

    Content Pruning

    SEO

Deleting or merging low-quality pages to lift the overall quality of a site.

Trade sites often carry 50+ thin blog posts dragging rankings down. Pruning can lift sitewide visibility within weeks.

    Content Refresh

    SEO

Updating older articles with new information, dates and structure.

Often the highest-ROI SEO activity. A 2022 trade guide refreshed for 2026 can recover lost positions in days.

    Skyscraper Technique

    SEO

Finding the top-ranking page for a keyword and creating something significantly better.

A useful framework for trade content but only works when paired with internal links and outreach.

    Keyword Density

    SEO

The percentage of times a keyword appears on a page relative to total word count.

Largely outdated. Modern Google understands semantic context – natural use of a keyword and related terms is better than counting.

    LSI Keywords

    SEO

Latent Semantic Indexing keywords – terms semantically related to the main keyword.

More accurately called 'related terms'. For a plumber: 'pipe', 'leak', 'boiler', 'water pressure'. Including them broadens topical coverage.

    Semantic SEO

    SEO

Optimising for the meaning of a query rather than the exact words.

Google's BERT and MUM models understand intent. Writing for humans on a clear topic now beats keyword stuffing on every metric.

    Domain Authority

    SEO

A third-party score (Moz) estimating how strongly a domain is likely to rank.

Not a Google metric, but a useful proxy. Trade sites typically operate between DA 10-30.

    Domain Rating

    SEO

Ahrefs' equivalent of Domain Authority – measures backlink profile strength.

Used to benchmark a trade site against competitors. A DR jump of 5-10 typically signals serious link-building progress.

    Digital PR

    SEO

Earning high-authority backlinks through press coverage, data stories and journalist outreach.

The most powerful link-building tactic of the last decade. A single Telegraph or BBC link can transform a trade site's authority.

    Guest Post

    SEO

An article published on someone else's website with a link back to your own.

Effective when the host site is genuinely relevant and high-quality. Mass-market guest post packages are a waste of money.

    HARO

    SEO

Help A Reporter Out – a service connecting journalists with expert sources.

Replaced by Connectively. Tradespeople answering journalist queries can earn high-DA backlinks from national press.

    PBN

    SEO

Private Blog Network – a group of websites built specifically to link to a target site.

Against Google's guidelines. Trade businesses caught using PBNs face manual penalties and ranking collapse.

    Disavow

    SEO

Telling Google to ignore specific backlinks pointing at your site.

Used when toxic links from spam sites threaten rankings. Submitted via Google Search Console.

    Anchor Distribution

    SEO

The mix of anchor text types pointing at a domain.

Over-optimised exact-match anchors trigger penalties. Healthy distributions skew toward branded and natural URL anchors.

    Local SEO

    17 terms

    Local SEO

    Local SEO

The branch of SEO focused on geographically-bound searches such as 'plumber near me' or 'builder in Norwich'.

Local SEO is the single biggest growth lever for UK trade businesses. It revolves around the Google Business Profile, location pages, NAP consistency, citations and Google reviews.

    Google Business Profile

    Local SEO

Google's free business listing that controls map results, knowledge panels and local 3-pack visibility.

Formerly Google My Business. For tradespeople it is the most important asset on the entire internet – more important than your website. Verification, categories, services, photos and reviews all feed Google's local ranking algorithm.

    Local 3-Pack

    Local SEO

The three highlighted Google Business Profile listings shown on a map at the top of local search results.

The 3-pack captures roughly 44–60% of all clicks on local searches. Ranking inside it can transform a tradesperson's lead flow overnight.

    Map Pack

    Local SEO

Another name for the local 3-pack – the map-based block of business listings shown above organic results.

Used interchangeably with 'local 3-pack'. Appearing here is the goal of every local SEO campaign for trades.

    NAP Consistency

    Local SEO

Ensuring your business Name, Address and Phone number are formatted identically across every directory and citation online.

Inconsistent NAP signals confuse Google and damage local rankings. UK tradespeople should audit Yell, Checkatrade, MyBuilder, Trustpilot and Companies House for matching details.

    Citation

    Local SEO

Any online mention of a business name, address and phone number – usually on a directory or review site.

High-authority UK citations include Yell, Thomson Local, Scoot, Cylex and trade-specific directories like Checkatrade, MyBuilder and Rated People.

    Google Maps Ranking

    Local SEO

Where your Google Business Profile appears when users search inside the Google Maps app or for local terms on Google.

Driven by relevance (categories and services), distance (proximity to the searcher) and prominence (reviews, citations and brand mentions).

    GBP

    Local SEO

    Acronym for Google Business Profile.

Used throughout the SEO industry as shorthand for the listing that powers map results and local rankings.

    Service Area Business

    Local SEO

A Google Business Profile setting for businesses that travel to customers rather than serve them at a fixed location.

Most UK tradespeople – plumbers, electricians, roofers, gas engineers – are service area businesses. Google hides the address and shows the service radius instead.

    Service Radius

    Local SEO

The geographic area a service area business serves, set on the Google Business Profile.

Google uses radius plus search location to decide whether to show a tradesperson. Smaller, accurate radii outperform vague nationwide claims.

    Justifications

    Local SEO

The 'In stock' or 'Mentioned in reviews' snippets shown beneath a Google Business Profile in the Map Pack.

Generated by review keywords. Reviews mentioning specific services trigger them and lift CTR by 25-35%.

    Geo-Grid

    Local SEO

A heat-map tool that shows where a Google Business Profile ranks across a town or city.

Tools like Local Falcon plot rankings on a grid so trades can spot geographic weak points and chase coverage.

    Q&A on GBP

    Local SEO

The questions-and-answers section of a Google Business Profile.

Owners can pre-seed common questions to control messaging. Activity here is a confirmed local ranking factor.

    Google Posts

    Local SEO

Short status-style posts published directly on a Google Business Profile.

Drive direct CTR from the Map Pack and signal to Google that the business is active. Ideal cadence is weekly for trades.

    Local Pack Filter

    Local SEO

Google's filtering mechanism that decides which businesses qualify for the local 3-pack on a given query.

Driven by relevance, distance, prominence and on-page signals. A misclassified primary category can disqualify a tradesperson entirely.

    Driving Direction Requests

    Local SEO

The number of times users tap 'Directions' on a Google Business Profile.

A primary KPI for trades with a physical premises. Tracked in the GBP performance dashboard.

    Analytics

    14 terms

    Click-Through Rate

    Analytics

The percentage of people who see your listing in search and click it.

CTR for position one in local trade searches typically sits between 28–35%. It can be lifted with stronger title tags, schema markup and review stars.

    Impression

    Analytics

A single instance of your page being shown in search results.

Tracked in Google Search Console and used to calculate CTR. Lots of impressions but few clicks signals weak titles or descriptions.

    Google Search Console

    Analytics

Google's free tool showing how a site performs in organic search – impressions, clicks, position and indexing status.

Mandatory for any trade business serious about SEO. Reveals which keywords drive traffic and which pages need fixing.

    GA4

    Analytics

    Google Analytics 4 – Google's event-based web analytics platform.

Tracks user journeys, conversions and traffic sources. Replaced Universal Analytics in July 2023.

    Bounce Rate

    Analytics

The percentage of sessions where a user viewed a single page and left without further interaction.

Less important than it once was, but still useful as a signal of page-intent mismatch.

    Conversion Rate

    Analytics

The percentage of visitors who complete a desired action – usually a phone call or form fill.

Strong trade websites convert 5–10% of mobile visitors into phone calls. Anything under 2% indicates a UX problem.

    Search Console

    Analytics

Google's free tool showing how a site performs in search – impressions, clicks, queries and indexing status.

Non-negotiable for any UK trade business. Reveals which keywords are bringing in calls and which pages need work.

    Bounce Rate

    Analytics

The percentage of visitors who leave a site after viewing only one page.

Less meaningful since GA4. For local trade sites a high bounce rate from a contact-driven landing page can actually mean conversion success – the user called instead of clicking.

    Conversion Rate

    Analytics

The percentage of visitors who take the desired action – form fill, phone call, quote request.

Strong UK trade websites convert at 3-8%. Below 2% suggests a speed, trust or messaging problem rather than a traffic problem.

    Goal Tracking

    Analytics

Configured events in GA4 that record valuable actions like form submissions and phone clicks.

The only way to prove SEO ROI for a tradesperson. Click-to-call tracking is essential.

    Attribution

    Analytics

How marketing channels get credit for leads and conversions.

Last-click attribution undervalues SEO. Trade businesses should use position-based or data-driven models in GA4.

    UTM Parameters

    Analytics

Tags added to URLs to track where traffic comes from.

Essential for measuring email, social and paid campaigns separately from organic search.

    Heatmap

    Analytics

A visualisation of where users click, scroll and hover on a page.

Tools like Hotjar reveal why trade landing pages don't convert – usually a buried CTA or unclear pricing.

    TTFB

    Analytics

Time to First Byte – how fast the server responds to a request.

Under 600ms is healthy. Slow TTFB is the #1 reason cheap shared hosting hurts trade SEO.

    Web

    11 terms

    HTTPS

    Web

Encrypted version of HTTP – required for trust signals, modern browsers and Google ranking.

Sites still on HTTP are flagged as 'Not Secure' in Chrome and lose form submissions and ranking position.

    Landing Page

    Web

A web page designed for a single purpose – usually capturing a lead from a campaign.

High-converting trade landing pages share traits: clear USP, trust signals, big phone number, fast load and one focused CTA.

    Above the Fold

    Web

The portion of a webpage visible before scrolling.

On trade sites this real estate must contain the headline, USP, phone number and a primary CTA – or you lose the lead.

    Call to Action

    Web

A prompt that tells users exactly what action to take next.

Specific, action-led CTAs ('Book your free quote') beat generic ones ('Submit').

    Click-to-Call

    Web

A tappable phone number on mobile that initiates a call.

The most important conversion mechanism on a trade site. Every page should have one in the header and footer at minimum.

    Schema Markup

    Web

Structured data that helps search engines understand page content.

LocalBusiness, Service, FAQ and Review schema all unlock rich results in Google for trade websites.

    JSON-LD

    Web

The recommended format for embedding structured data on a webpage.

Sits in a script tag and is invisible to users. Powers rich snippets, knowledge panels and AI Overviews.

    Open Graph

    Web

Meta tags that control how a page appears when shared on Facebook, LinkedIn and other platforms.

Custom OG images dramatically improve social CTR for trade businesses sharing case studies and offers.

    Favicon

    Web

The small site icon shown in browser tabs and search results.

Now visible in mobile Google results. Branded favicons lift CTR for tradespeople competing in crowded SERPs.

    Sticky CTA

    Web

A call-to-action that remains visible as the user scrolls.

Lifts mobile conversion on trade sites by 15-25% by keeping the phone number always one tap away.

    Form Conversion

    Web

The percentage of users who complete and submit a contact form.

Reduce form fields to lift conversions. Trade quote forms with 3 fields convert 40% better than 7-field versions.

    PPC

    16 terms

    PPC

    PPC

Pay-Per-Click – paid advertising where you pay each time someone clicks your ad.

For tradespeople this almost always means Google Ads. Pairs well with SEO: PPC drives instant leads while SEO compounds.

    Quality Score

    PPC

Google's 1–10 rating of a Google Ads keyword based on CTR, ad relevance and landing page experience.

Higher Quality Score = lower cost per click. A score of 8+ can cut click costs by half.

    Cost Per Click

    PPC

The average price you pay each time someone clicks your Google Ad.

UK trade CPCs range from £2 (low-competition rural) to £25+ (London emergency plumber).

    Negative Keyword

    PPC

A keyword that prevents your Google Ad from showing for unwanted searches.

Essential for trades. Common negatives: 'jobs', 'training', 'DIY', 'free'.

    Conversion Tracking

    PPC

Measuring which Google Ads clicks lead to phone calls, form fills or bookings.

Without conversion tracking, every PPC campaign is guesswork. Call tracking numbers and GA4 events are the foundation.

    PPC

    PPC

Pay-Per-Click advertising – paid ads on Google, Bing or social platforms.

Trades use PPC to win immediate visibility while SEO compounds in the background. Google Ads is the dominant platform.

    Quality Score

    PPC

Google Ads' rating of keyword, ad and landing page quality.

Higher quality scores mean lower cost per click. Most trade campaigns can cut spend 30-40% by lifting quality score from 5 to 8+.

    Cost Per Click

    PPC

The amount paid each time someone clicks on an ad.

UK trade CPCs range from £1 (general gardener) to £25+ (emergency boiler repair London).

    Cost Per Lead

    PPC

Total ad spend divided by the number of leads generated.

The metric that matters for trades. Healthy CPL ranges from £15 (general handyman) to £80 (commercial electrical).

    Negative Keywords

    PPC

Search terms you tell Google not to show your ads for.

Critical for trades. A plumber blocking 'training', 'jobs', 'DIY' and 'salary' can cut wasted spend by 30%+.

    Match Type

    PPC

How closely a search query must match a keyword for an ad to show – broad, phrase or exact.

Phrase and exact match deliver better lead quality for trades. Broad match without strong negatives burns budget fast.

    Local Service Ads

    PPC

Google's pay-per-lead ads shown above traditional search ads for local service businesses.

Currently rolling out in the UK. Trades pay only for verified leads, not clicks. Verified by Google badge boosts trust.

    Conversion Tracking

    PPC

Recording which ad clicks lead to leads or sales.

Without it, trade ad campaigns are flying blind. Phone-call conversion tracking is essential.

    Ad Extensions

    PPC

Extra information attached to a Google Ad – sitelinks, callouts, structured snippets.

Lift CTR by 10-15%. Call extensions are non-negotiable for trades – they put the phone number directly in the ad.

    Smart Bidding

    PPC

Google Ads automated bidding strategies that use machine learning to optimise for conversions.

Maximize Conversions and Target CPA work well for trades once you have 30+ conversions in a 30-day window.

    Trade

    13 terms

    Tradesperson

    Trade

A skilled manual worker in a specific trade – plumber, electrician, builder, roofer, joiner, etc.

Preferred UK term over 'tradesman' (gendered) or 'contractor' (US). 'Tradespeople' is the plural.

    Gas Safe

    Trade

The official UK register of engineers qualified to work on gas appliances.

Legal requirement to display the Gas Safe logo and engineer ID number. A strong trust signal that boosts conversion rates.

    NICEIC

    Trade

The UK's leading certification body for electrical contractors.

NICEIC accreditation is a major trust signal for electricians and unlocks domestic and commercial work.

    EICR

    Trade

Electrical Installation Condition Report – a periodic safety inspection of a property's electrics.

Mandatory for UK rental properties every 5 years. A high-volume search term for electricians targeting landlords.

    Checkatrade

    Trade

A UK directory of vetted tradespeople that charges a monthly subscription for leads.

Useful for early-stage credibility but expensive. Most established trades earn far better ROI from organic SEO.

    MyBuilder

    Trade

A UK lead-generation marketplace for tradespeople.

Pay-per-credit model. Useful for early traction but increasingly expensive. SEO and GBP outperform long-term.

    Rated People

    Trade

A UK platform connecting homeowners with vetted tradespeople.

Similar economics to MyBuilder. Many trades reduce reliance once their own SEO matures.

    Trustpilot

    Trade

    A widely-used UK review platform.

Useful for off-Google trust signals. Reviews appear in branded search results when paired with Review schema.

    TrustMark

    Trade

The UK government-endorsed quality scheme for tradespeople.

A strong trust signal for retrofit, energy and construction work – often required for ECO4 funding.

    MCS Certified

    Trade

Microgeneration Certification Scheme – mandatory for renewable installs eligible for grants.

Solar, heat pump and battery installers must be MCS certified to access UK government schemes – a powerful keyword to rank for.

    Part P

    Trade

The UK building regulation covering electrical safety in domestic properties.

Part P certification is an essential trust signal for any electrician's website and a high-volume search term.

    City & Guilds

    Trade

The leading UK awarding body for trade qualifications.

Listing City & Guilds qualifications on About and About-the-Trade pages is a meaningful E-E-A-T signal.

    Yell

    Trade

The UK's online evolution of the Yellow Pages business directory.

Still a useful citation source for NAP consistency, but no longer a primary source of trade leads in 2026.
